Fun for the entire family is available during Arts/Quincy Riverfest held annually the third Sunday in September along Quincy’s beautiful riverfront. The one-day free celebration of the arts and the Mississippi River has something for every age and every taste.
Riverfest 2008 is scheduled for Sunday, September 21, 2008. Artists and vendors interested in exhibiting at Arts/Quincy Riverfest may call for an application.
The festival, sponsored by the Quincy Park District, Refreshment Services Pepsi, WQJC LP FM 107.9 FM Jazz, Dene Lambkin Honda and the Quincy Society of Fine Arts, attracts 7,500 individuals from the tri-state area. The festival includes the Family Fun Zone, with hands-on art activities for children; three stages of entertainment; over 100 booths of artists, crafters, arts organizations and local groups; and tasty treats from a variety of food vendors.
David Carter, a pen and ink artist from Independence, MO, was selected as the 2007 artist winner at Arts/Quincy Riverfest on Sunday, September 16.
Carter’s mixed media pieces utilizing pen and ink drawings highlighted with oil paint displayed a variety of subject matter, from the Statue of Liberty to guardian angels.
“Carter’s work has a quirky style with exceptional use of perspective,” described artist judge Sandy Miller. “His work displays outstanding media control and highly creative professionalism.”
Five artists were selected for honorable mention. Those include Felicia Breen, pottery; Julie Bilow & Gabriel Baca, jewelry; Robert Lourwood, photography; Ron Vivod, photography; and Patti Sorenson, mixed media.
The Mississippi Thespians were selected as the QSFA member organization winner. The Mississippi Thespians, the youngest Civil War Reenactors in the country, created a Civil War camp with a tent, flags, photographs and memorabilia as well as members costumed in 1860s clothing, who spoke eloquently about their organization and the Civil War years.
Arts/Quincy Riverfest began in 1986 as a part of the national and state Arts/Week Celebration. Those wishing additional information on Arts/Quincy Riverfest may call (217)222-3432.
